PTI May Blog Hop - The 7-Layer Salad, umm, I mean ... Card

This month's PTI Blog Hop challenge is to gleam inspiration from the above photo and use it to create a project!

My eye was first drawn to the ornate white plate in the inspiration photo, so I started with a die cut of the Simply Jane frame in white, embossed in white.  Next I spotted the pretty gingham-patterned plate with the decorative scallop design.  I knew I'd seen something similar in a PTI stamp, then remembered this one in the Birthday Tags set!  I wanted to use a die cut of the Beautiful Blooms in green to resemble the petal-shaped plate, but alas the cut was just a tad too small behind the tag image.  I settled upon a die cut from limitless layers ovals instead.

Lastly, I simply stacked and layered various die cuts of black and white patterns to finish the card.  There are a total of six layers (7 if the houndstooth card base counts), each one layered with foam dimensionals.  What a fun and modern card.  I just wish I knew someone who I thought the style was fitting for them.  :)

Supplies (All PTI unless noted otherwise):
Stamps: Background Basics: Houndstooth, Polka Dot Basics II, Simply Jane, Birthday Tags 2012
Ink: True Black, Versamark (Tsukineko)
Dies: Mega Mat Stack 1, Limitless Layers Ovals, Simply Jane
Card Stock: Stampers Select White, Simply Chartreuse, black (Recollections)
Other: white embossing powder (Ranger)

PTI Make It Monday #64: Using Color Inspiration

This week Papertrey Ink has a tutorial and challenge hosted by Nichole. She has shown us how to use color for inspiration in our projects. If you would like to check it out for yourself, you can find all the info here.

I chose the color combination shown above to inspire this project:

I CASEd this card from this one by Betsy Veldman.

I used the same technique and general composition as Betsy, but changed up the colors to suit this color challenge.

I started by stamping from the Year of Flowers: Violets stamp set on watercolor paper with Versamark ink and heat embossing with white embossing powder.

Next, I applied some distress ink to the entire paper, including a light application of blue to the background.

Next, I placed the paper onto a plastic tray and sprayed with water until the paper was saturated.

I was a little bit scared that I'd ruined the project after spraying it with water.  It looked way too runny.  But, I was happy to discover that it turned out so pretty after I left it to dry for the day.  Betsy was right to say that this effect is quite easy to achieve!

I trimmed the paper to size, sewed along the edges, and then adhered it to a card stock base that I'd stamped with a chevron design.

I love the way it turned out and can't wait to make more to create a pretty little gift set for someone special!

Supplies (all PTI unless noted):
Stamps:  Year of Flowers: Violets, Chevron Backdrops (Lawn Fawn)
Ink:  Grape Jelly (Momento), Dusty Concord (Ranger), Faded Jeans (Ranger), Peeled Paint (Ranger), Mustard Seed (Ranger), Versamark (Tsukineko)
Paper:  Watercolor paper (Strathmore), Winter Wisteria
Other:  white embossing powder

PTI Make It Monday #64: Using Color Inspiration

This week Papertrey Ink has a tutorial and challenge hosted by Nichole. She has shown us how to use color for inspiration in our projects. If you would like to check it out for yourself, you can find all the info here.

I chose the color combination shown above to inspire this project:

I decided to make this small folder to hold two flower seed packets as a small gift to the Mothers in my MOPS group.  I really like the sentiment, as it is so fitting for a mom.

To make each folder, I started with a piece of tagboard and cut it down to 8"x11.25".  The tagboard is kind of flimsy, so I decided to reinforce it by doubling-up the sides.  Had I used PTI card stock, I would have skipped that step and just cut my card stock to 8"x7" (essentially eliminating the top-most and bottom-most edges to the score-lines).

I scored the tagboard at the 3.5", 8.5", and 10.5" marks vertically and at the 3.75" and 4.25" marks on the horizontal.

I stamped the front and inside panels as shown:

I secured the 3.5" top flap to the backside (inside of the project), then repeated with the 3/4" flap, so that the project ends up looking like this:

I'd planned on sewing the edges closed to create the folder pockets, but since I had 36 of these to make I opted to just use a fine line of glue instead.  I placed a fine line of glue at each edge as well as over the entire spine area on the 2" flap.  Hopefully you can see it in the photo:

Once secured, I used the Crop-o-dile to punch the two small holes:

I added the "Handmade Just For You" stamp on the backside of the folder as an after-thought:

Insert 2 packages of seeds:

Fish some bakers twine through the two holes and wrap it around the entire project 4 to 5 times and finish with a bow.

I love the sentiment in the Garden Variety II set and think it fits perfectly for a teacher-gift, or in my case, for Mothers of Pre-schoolers.  :)

Supplies (all PTI unless noted):
Stamps:  Garden Variety II, Year of Flowers Collection, Background Basics: Postmarks, Year of Flowers: Lily of the Valley, Handmade Hodgepodge
Ink:  Ocean Tides, Lavender Moon, Smokey Shadow, Winter Wisteria, Grape Jelly (Momento)
Paper:  Tagboard (Pacon)
Other:  Bakers twine (pickyourplum dot com)
